Rolling out all the favorites, and loaded with sake

Nakajima opened twenty-four years ago, and it has been a hit ever since. It’s conveniently located (if you have a car) on a major road so it’s an easy place to stop and eat if you are on the go. The restaurant was renovated in 2019 to include spacious tatami mat seats where you can take off your shoes and relax. The goal was to create a home-like atmosphere. At lunchtime, you can find a wide selection of “Japanese favorites” like udon, ramen, omelet rice, hamburger steak, and rice bowls. In the evening, the menu is geared towards food that is not only local, but that pairs well with sake, such as sashimi, grilled food, and tempura. There’s also a list of recommendations at the counter. Taste the fresh flavors of Kyotango, like kawahagi and mackerel heshiko. These dishes are guaranteed to make you want some of the Tamagawa label sake from Kumihama [Kinoshita Sake Brewery].

from the chef:

My father started this restaurant, making me the second generation. The restaurant was small when it first opened, but thanks to local regulars and beach goers, we were able to make it bigger. I trained at Maruyasu, a 100-year-old establishment specializing in Kyoto-style cuisine. Taking advantage of that experience, I make wholehearted dishes that highlight the splendor of both the mountains and sea from local Kumihama. I especially recommend the Japanese horse mackerel from summer to autumn, as well as the rare marbled rockfish (when it can be found). Nothing is better than pairing these with Tamagawa’s local sake.

Bigfin reef squid, which is in season in autumn, is caught locally at Minato fishing port in Kumihama Bay, and the vegetables for the kakiage, such as onions, burdock, and mitsuba, are grown locally. This bowl is brimming with local pride.
