Kumihama no Yado Tsuruya
Agriculture and Aquaculture meet at this unique guest house
This guest house is located in Shotenkyo, an area made up of a natural sandbar separating Kumihama Bay from the Sea of Japan, just like Amanohashidate, one of the Three Scenic Views of Japan. On the Sea of Japan side, the white sand beaches continue for about 6 km, with guest houses and inns lined up along the stretch. People stay at Kumihama no Yado Tsuruya for the swimming in the summer, and crab cuisine in the winter. At first, the multi-course meals here were limited to overnight guests, but now with reservations even people who are daytripping can experience Tsuruya’s seafood cuisine. There is fresh fish fried at Minato’s Fishing Port (just a 10 minute walk away), and local sashimi that almost looks too good to eat, almost!
from the chef:
It is my morning routine to purchase fish at Minato Fishing Port. I also raise oysters in Kumihama Bay and grow vegetables on my farm. Nearby, there are also places to purchase locally grown melon in the summer, and a variety of other fruits like pears and grapes in the fall. There is so much excellent food to experience in Kumihama. To get an idea of Kumihama’s diverse landscape, including the sandbar where we are, I recommend climbing Mt. Kabuto (only about a 20 minute walk). It’s especially beautiful on early autumn mornings when you can see the sea of clouds.
Boiled local fish
Season the seasonal fish firmly. The photo shows a light white fish (filefish), which is similar to fugu, that has been boiled with turban shells and vegetables from our farm.
