Rice Bowls seasoned with the taste and wisdom of ancient Japan

Look for the teahouse-like appearance along the back stone-paved street of Motoise Kono Shrine. That’s where you’ll find Tsuruya Shokudo. Inside the restaurant, guests are surrounded by earthen walls decorated with retro accessories. And the restaurant also has views of Amanohashidate, one of Japan’s Three Scenic Views, which is fitting since you can order a special rice bowl that uses ingredients from Miyazu Bay (which is on one side of Amanohashidate). The “Tango Jewel Rice Bowl” features Miyazu-produced devil weed (known as a superfood). There is also a seafood bowl with egg-grilled rice inspired by a popular rice-dish local fishermen often eat. They recommended way to eat it is by trying a piece of sashimi before mixing the rest of the rice bowl together. The "Kintaru sardine bowl" uses locally-raised sardines. These sardines are a valuable species of fish with regulations in place to protect them from overfishing. They are rich in flavor and available here.

from the chef:

The ingredients of Kyoto by the Sea are really wonderful! I would like to provide dishes that convey the charm of the land and give a sense of the warmth and history of the area. We are not just serving seafood bowls, but dishes that can only be eaten here. For example, the "Jewel Rice Bowl" is a meal that focuses on akamoku (devil weed), which is often eaten locally. The "sea and field cake set" made with seaweed and pesticide-free vegetables is also popular. Please drop by for lunch or a coffee. Enjoy the local atmosphere and taste the seasons in our meals and desserts.
