Overlooking the Sea and serving the best seafood directly from Taiza
Hisami looks like a house on a hill. You can spot it while driving along the deep blue sea. And from the inside, the Japanese Sea fills your field of view. The focus of the cuisine is local, and with Taiza Port only a few minutes away, Hisami creates a variety of fish dishes that use seafood caught that day. They have perfected local delicacies like seafood rice bowls, homemade sesame pickles, as well as seasonal dishes. Despite being a local restaurant, they also have a lineup of international dishes, and special full course meals created around the Japan-famous Taiza Crab (caught in this area). The must-try item is the homemade heshiko (rice bran mackerel), which has become quite a local specialty. If you want to buy it as a souvenir, it’s also sold right next door at Heshiko Kobo HISAMI, a cafe run by Hisami. It’s quite stylish and newly opened.

In the fishing village of Taiza, to eat delicious sashimi usually requires advanced reservations and overnight stays. In 1993, we opened a casual restaurant in order to make it easier for people to eat fresh local fish. We are also proud of our specialty, heshiko, because it is a direct connection to our grandparents. We have tried to improve upon their recipe so people will enjoy it for generations to come. It is characterized by an inherent saltiness and is lightly fermented. The taste is quite mellow, which is a bit different from the traditional heshiko.
Kyoto seafood bowl (tsuki)
A seafood rice bowl containing a generous amount of 7-9 kinds of local fish. For even more variety you can mix up the taste with with tataki, kombu, or side dishes. 1,800 yen
Homemade mackerel heshiko (lightly fermented)
Chef/owner Mr. Imade makes this heshiko by hand, one by one. You can enjoy variations such as the quality of mackerel used and different rice brans. There is also a set meal menu. 350 yen
Rock oyster (raw)
The fish purchased from Hirai Suisan (a well known fishery), represents the sea of Tango itself. Rock oysters appear in the summer and snow crabs appear in the winter, and you can always see a variety of seasonal seafood on the menu. 1,100 yen
