Wisdom mochi, a specialty of Amanohashidate. Carefully made using old-fashioned methods.

"Wisdom Mochi" is said to date back to the Kamakura period (1326 to 1329). When a high priest in Daitoku Temple, Kyoto, met a bright child near Monjudo (Chionji Temple) and asked the boy why he was so intelligent, the boy said he had eaten mochi made by Manjusri (also called Monju), a Bodhisattva. That’s how Wisdom Mochi got its name, and it is still sold only at four teahouses in front of the temple. One of them, Chitose Teahouse, is a long-established teahouse that has a record of being founded in the Edo period. Using the old-fashioned method of making mochi, the taste of "Wisdom Mochi" has been maintained for about 330 years. Normal bean paste is produced by removing the red bean peel, but this is a rare bean paste that is ground before cooking the whole red bean. Azuki beans are made in Hokkaido with soft skin and are made fresh by artisans every day. The sticky rice used is 100% produced in Tango, and rice flour is also used for dusting. Enjoy traditional, local flavors.

I've been a confectioner for 10 years on this street. "Wisdom Mochi" is a traditional Japanese confectionery made in Amanohashidate. It’s soft sticky rice cake with freshly-prepared anko (red bean paste). It may seem deceptively simple, but we have to pay particular attention to rice steaming, which is affected by both outside temperature and water temperature. Since "Wisdom Mochi" does not contain any preservatives, we make it every morning and place it fresh in the store that day. Above all, I'm glad that I can see customers and hear them say, "It was delicious." If you want to buy some to take home, please consume it within 1-2 days.

Kinako Mochi (roasted soybean flour)

Roasted soybean flour makes a nice addition to the traditional Wisdom Mochi. We use Tamba black soybean kinako, which has a mild sweetness and plenty of flavor. 270 yen (tax included)
